NOTICE
»t •
It was not the design of the writer to submit this Catalogue to the public
without the indorsement of one or more gentlemen, to whose superior judgment
and experience in coins it is always a pleasure to render respectful deference;
but the necessity of sending the manuscript to the printer before an oppor-
tunity of comparing it with the coins could be secured, has rendered this
course imperative.
In thus taking the responsibility of the Catalogue upon himself, the writer
relies upon the confidence of those to whom it will be sent. It may confirm
that confidence to be assured that an unusual degree of care has been bestowed
upon its preparation ; not with any view to scientific, but solely to accurate
descriptions. This has been especially observed with reference to the condition
of the pieces. It is not easy to convey exact intelligence concerning the
history, rarity, and condition of a great number of coins, with the brevity
requisite in a sale-catalogue. From the nature of the case, many of the terms
employed must be relative, or positive only when positively stated. Thus,
“Fine,” although never applied to a poor coin, would, in the case of one as
rare as Mr. Mickly’s Sommer Island penny, be justified, when the actual con-
dition of the piece was below the standard of fineness governing in a series of
United States cents. It must also be remembered that the stronger term,
“very fine,” is still below “uncirculated,” or “perfect.”
But the intelligent collector will not be misled in the present instance.
The collection to be sold, although not large, is strictly a fine one; and every
piece will be found to justify what is said of it in the Catalogue.
WM. H. STROBRIDG-E.
Nkw-Yoric, March 10th, 1863.

Note. — The few last lots marked as “ extremely fine” are only not de-
scribed as uncirculated because they show marks of contact with each
other, having been, as has all the silver in the Addenda, kept together in
one collection for a period corresponding to the dates on the pieces. The
entire set of half dollars which is here offered is believed to be second to
none , if we except, as we are gracious enough to do, a single collection
consisting mostly of proofs.
The sale of the foregoing Catalogue will commence with the
Addenda.
